Thursday 13

The 13 things I want to do before I die:

1. Own a house at the beach

2. Go to the Super Bowl

3. Flip a house

4. Have a farm...with cows, goats, chickens, roosters, lots of dogs, and land to grow crops!

5. See Phantom of the Opera on Broadway

6. Go to South America to Patagonia and the Galapagos Islands

7. Retire while I am still young

8. Be debt FREE

9. Buy Hal a vintage car

10. Go skiing out west, I don't care where, just anywhere west of the Mississippi River!

11. See the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) in person!

12. Become a better shagger (I really hope to do this before I am 30)
13. Go on our vacation that we are planning now: Napa Valley, Seattle, Alaska

Of course this is not all I want to do, but these are some personal goals that I have for myself to accomplish while I am still young and healthy.

I love telling that story

I am going to apologize now for the length of the following story. I love telling it! When I started the post the other night, I started writing with the intention of expressing how lucky I feel to be married to my best friend. I was trying to give some history first, then it turned into what it is now. I hope y'all enjoy it, and thanks for reading!

Butterflies (continued)

The fall following my high school graduation I moved to Columbia to start school at USC. It was just as I suspected, what little contact I did have with my friend had stopped. I got settled in at USC, made lots of new friends, and started my new life as a college student. Fall went by, and my friend and I hadn't spoken for what seemed like years. That was okay, we were in different places. The thoughts of him had turned to distant memories. All of the butterflies were gone.

On Friday January 30, 2003 I packed up my things to go home for the weekend. I had just had one of the most terrifying and awful nights of my life (a story for another blog). I needed to get away, I needed to be home. I got out of class that Friday morning, went back to my dorm to get my things, and checked my email before making my trek up the interstate. I had an email from my mom telling me that I should stop by her school on the way home. I emailed her back, telling her that I was leaving right then and I would be there in about an hour and a half.

About 1:00 I rolled into the D.R. Hill parking lot to visit my mom. As I said before, I had a really awful night the night before, so I looked terrible. I was wearing blue jeans, a black tee shirt, and a black fleece pullover. I had no make up on, my hair was pulled back in a pony tail, and I just felt like a mess. I went on into the school anyway, I didn't care much how I looked to my mom's friends. When I got there my mom said that there was someone she wanted to take me to see, I hadn't seen them in a while, and she knew I would want to see HIM. "Him?" I thought. Must be one of my old teachers. I followed my mom out of her office and down the long hall to the gymnasium. On the way there she said that there was a substitute teacher that I was going to see. When we opened the door, I looked around, and down on the gym floor in the far right, was my friend. The butterflies in my stomach came rushing back, I could feel my jaw hit the ground and the blood flee from my face.

He spotted me about the same time I spotted him, and a big smile came across his face. I mustered up a little wave, and then started walking forward to the stairs. He walked over to meet me and greeted me with a big hug. "Hey girl!" he said, like he was so happy to see me. We had never hugged like that before. We started talking just like old times. Finally I think all the blood had returned to my face, and I was probably blushing. I asked him how he and his girlfriend were doing and he told me that they were okay. I was so bummed. I had really thought this might be my chance. I told him it was great to see him and we said our goodbyes. I walked away thinking again "If only..."

I went home and got some much needed sleep that day. One of my friends called and wanted to see me while I was home so I humored him and went out for a few hours. I had left my cell phone in my car, and when I got back in I had 3 missed calls. After the night I had just had, I didn't want anyone to be calling me. As I listened to my messages, my heart was racing, the first was from my mom. She said "Haley, your FRIEND called here tonight wanting your phone number. I hope it was okay, but I gave him your cell phone number." I was stunned, I didn't know what to think, but I had to listen to the rest of my messages. The next message was from HIM, he had actually called me! HE HAD A GIRLFRIEND and he was calling ME! He said "Hey Haley, this is Hal Chafey, I was calling to talk, I was thinking that we should get together before I leave for spring training in March." Holy Cow! Those butterflies almost carried me away! I couldn't believe it, just when I thought it was over, it had only just begun!

I raced to dial his number back, and he answered. We talked for a few minutes and he told me he would call me the following week. I was so excited! Of course, you know boys, by Wednesday of the following week, he hadn't called. I was absolutely NOT going to let this boy, the guy that I had dreamed about for 5 years, get away from me this time. I picked up my phone and I called him. When he answered, we said hello and exchanged our initial pleasantries. He immediately apologized for not calling. He said, "Haley, I am so sorry for not calling, I didn't know how you would feel about this, but I broke up with my girlfriend yesterday." WOO HOO was what was going through my brain at that moment but instead I said, "Oh I am so sorry to hear that." He told me that it had been a long time coming and that he wasn't upset at all. What really shocked me was what he said next. "I was hoping that I could come to Columbia and visit you tomorrow," he said. I told him that would be fine and that I would call my good friend Evan to see if he could stay the night with him.

The next day I was not worth a penny all day long. I had butterflies in my stomach from the minute I woke up. I knew this would be the first day of the rest of my life. He arrived about 4:00 and I could tell he was nervous! We both knew, this was it! For the next month we were inseparable. He would drive down every other day to see me and I would sneak home every other day and see him, then we would spend every minute of the weekend together. I will never forget, one of the first nights we were together, I wore a shirt from Hollister that said "I melted Frosty" on it. When he saw it he said, "You melted Hal too." The butterflies got me again.

Here we are 4 and a half years later, MARRIED. I look at him still today and think "WOW, I really did marry the man of my dreams!" Everytime he opens the door, calls my cell phone, or simply says "I love you" those same butterflies get me. The road hasn't always been easy, but it makes everything worth it! The butterflies make it worth it!

Butterflies...

Almost 9 years ago I was given an opportunity that would change my life forever. My friend Sallie had told me that the baseball coach at Byrnes, where I was in the 9th grade, was looking for a new girl to keep score for the team. Of course I jumped at the chance and went to meet Coach Simmons. He told me that I would be a great fit for the team and that scrimmages would start the first week in February. Boy, was I excited. I had no idea what was in store for me!

The first week of February I reported to the baseball field as told, for the first scrimmage. I can still remember the feeling. My heart was racing, my palms were sweaty, I could hardly remember my own name. I had planned for this day for 4 months. I put on my cool Nike tennis shoes, curled my hair, and wore the cutest yet casual outfit I had in my closet.

I walked into the fence and strolled down to the dugout where I met Coach Simmons and Coach Lewis. It was one of those "out of body" experiences, where I knew I was walking, but I couldn't feel a thing. In front of me were 20 of the cutest boys I had ever seen! I just kept thinking, "Wow, I am so lucky!"

It was game time so I found a seat in the dug out, got my score book, and got ready to begin. At the time I was sitting all alone. I had used all the nerve in my body just to walk down to the field, I didn't have any left to introduce myself to anyone. Luckily Coach Simmons came up and got the attention of all the boys. He then introduced me as the new score keeper and told those boys that they were to keep their hands off me! Haha. Imagine that!

A couple of games into the season I began to get to know the boys and they became more comfortable with me being around. I was sitting in my usual chair in the front of the dug out when one of the players came to sit down beside me. He was a pitcher and wouldn't be pitching that game, so he sat down with me to keep up with the pitch count. That night I made a new friend, one that I wouldn't be able to stop thinking about for the next few days!

My friend and I became very close over that baseball season, but I really dreaded to see the end come. I had developed a crush on him, and he would be graduating in a month. As I knew it, once baseball season was over, so was our friendship. I finished my 9th grade year and my friend went off to college. I was young, so I knew there would be other boys. The funny thing is, there weren't. I actually dated a few guys in high school, one for 2 years, but through all of those relationships, I could never stop thinking of him.

He would come home to football games, I would see him, and my whole world would stop. The butterflies in my stomach would just consume me. He had a girlfriend and I had a boyfriend. "If only...," I thought. I never stopped thinking about him. I broke up with my boyfriend my senior year and went on to graduate in the spring of '02. On my birthday, in June of that same year, he was drafted in the Major League Baseball draft with the St. Louis Cardinals. Whether it be the occasional IM or correspondence through his sister, I knew that what touch we still had with each other was done.

Home Is Where the Heart Is

Earlier this morning I attended the funeral of a great family friend. My uncle's (mom's sister's husband) mom had passed away after 85 fulfilling years on this earth. The family was always very close with our family, and it was very sad to hear of her death. I sat there at the funeral, listened to the pastor deliver the eulogy, and hoped that one day when God does call me home, I will have left half the legacy that this woman has.

The preacher spoke about what an amazing woman, mother, wife, friend, and christian she was. He said one thing that really stuck out in my mind, and as I thought about it, I realized just how true the statement was. He said that no matter where she was or where she was living, when her family was near, she was HOME...on earth at least.

I really grasped that statement and my mind really began to trail away thinking of just how true that was to me! No matter where I am or what I am doing, when I am near my family, I am home. I am so lucky to be surrounded by such wonderful family who love me just as much as I love them. All of the material things I have would not matter if I didn't have my family to share them with.

Now, not only do I have wonderful parents, but I have a wonderful husband and in-laws who are such important parts of my family as well. There are so many times that I cherish with my family that mean so much more than any item that you can buy. Whether we are riding the golf cart with my parents or sitting around a table playing UNO with Hal's whole family, I know that these times are the essence of my life. When I look back in 20 years, I will remember those special times that we spent together, the times where we really did nothing, but meant everything to me.

I feel so lucky to feel so loved. I know that there are people in this world who are not as lucky as me, who do not have anyone, and I am so thankful for the life I have been blessed with. Home is where my heart is, and my family has my heart! :D
